Wow.  What a day we had for the 2011 Yellow Jacket Challenge.  Sunday, April 17, brought snow, hail, rain, strong wind gusts, and a whopping high temperature of 36 degrees.  BUT . . .  it also brought 332 runners and 96 walkers for a total of 428 participants, only 38 fewer than the record high year.  Plus, the young fun runs were enjoyed by almost 100 participants.  Considering the less than pleasant weather conditions, these numbers are pretty impressive.  The 4th annual YJC was supported by 30 business sponsors and community partners and more than 100 volunteers.

This event would never be possible without the support of an entire community and the participants that make it happen.  On behalf of Greenville Public Schools, the Education Foundation of Greenville, and the Yellow Jacket Challenge, thank you for being a part of it all. Together, we celebrated healthy lifestyles and raised money for wellnes programs and initiatives as granted through the Education Foundation of Greenville.  But, above all,  we accomplished our goal of encouraging students, staff, parents and the community to set and reach a personal fitness goal…running a first 5K, breaking a personal record, or walking one mile.

Thank you all for making the Yellow Jacket Challenge such a success!  Your participation and support is greatly appreciated.

Please mark your calendars for the 5th annual Yellow Jacket Challenge on Sunday, April 15, 2012.

The 5K course is USATF certified. It is mostly flat and consistently receives rave reviews. Starting outside the stadium, you will run along the scenic Fred Meijer Flat River Trail and residential neighborhoods. Finish on the track inside the stadium in front of your cheering family and friends.

The 1 Mile walk begins behind the 5K runners, outside of Yellow Jacket Stadium. You will stroll along the Fred Meijer Flat River Trail and residential neighborhoods. Finish in the Greenville High School parking lot.

The Young Yellow Jacket Fun Runs will occur following the 5K Run. Children ages 5th grade and younger may choose to run 1 mile, ½ mile, or 50 yard dash. The events take place at centerfield of Yellow Jacket Stadium, led by the school district’s Physical Education instructors. All participants earn a finisher’s ribbon. Local mascots & law enforcement cheer for the children!
