Mark your calendars!

Sunday, April 23, 2017

The 2016 YJC blessed us with a beautiful day for the running of the 9th annual Yellow Jacket Challenge held on Sunday, April 17.  Record temperatures in the 70’s, sunshine, and beautiful blue skies brought us the second best year ever!  We had 367 runners and more than 110 walkers.  Elementary running clubs came out in force with 46% of the total runners from the two youngest age groups.  Many people finished their first 5K.  There were personal triumphs celebrated.  Deb Bendon received a double lung transplant 16 months ago and walked the 5K with her family by her side.  Ann Harvey achieved her dream of running her first 5K after a weight loss journey from a 4XL to an XL. And, let’s not forget this year’s race winner rode his bicycle 50 miles to get here!  These stories are an inspiration to all of us and the reason why the YJC is truly a celebration of family and community.  I would like to share my sincere thanks to every person who has a hand in making the YJC such a success.  To our 23 sponsors and community partners, thank you for providing the funding necessary to make it happen.  To over 100 volunteers, thank you for managing every detail and making it look easy. To our running club coaches, thank you for instilling such excitement in our young runners.  To every runner and walker, many who have come every year, thank you for dedicating this day on your calendar and making it such a special event.  Please know how much I appreciate every single person and all they do to make the Yellow Jacket Challenge a tremendous success.  I can’t wait to see you on April 23, 2017.  We will celebrate 10 years running!

The 5K course is USATF certified. It is mostly flat and consistently receives rave reviews. Starting outside the stadium, you will run along the scenic Fred Meijer Flat River Trail and residential neighborhoods. Finish on Legacy Field, inside the stadium, in front of your cheering family and friends.

The 1 Mile walk begins behind the 5K runners. You will stroll along the Fred Meijer Flat River Trail and residential neighborhoods. Finish in the Greenville High School parking lot.

The Young Yellow Jacket Fun Runs will occur following the 5K Run. Children ages 5th grade and younger may choose to run 1 mile, ½ mile, or 50 yard dash. The events take place at centerfield of Yellow Jacket Stadium, led by the school district’s Physical Education instructors. All participants earn a finisher’s ribbon. Local mascots & law enforcement cheer for the children!

Race results will be posted immediately following the 5K Run. Results will also be posted later on race day online at Playmakers and eventually on this page.
